Have you noticed yourself clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth? You're not alone. It's estimated that 10% of the population grind their teeth, and some might not even know it! Often times, it occurs during sleep. Teeth grinding, or bruxism (BRUK-siz-um), can be caused a multitude of things, including:
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Misaligned Teeth
- Anger
- Frustration
- Tension
- Even Sleep Apnea
If you are an occasional grinder, you are probably not causing much harm. If your grinding is more on a daily basis, you may be damaging your teeth or causing other oral health complications. Chronic grinding can result in the following:
- Chipped Teeth
- Sensitivity
- Fractured Teeth (Cracked)
- Loosening of Teeth
- Total Loss of Teeth
- Worn Down Enamel (Attrition)
- New or Worsening TMJ
- Change of Face Shape
Your dentist and dental hygienist are trained to look for signs of bruxism and help you with treatment- bruxism guards. You might also know them as night guards, occlusal guards, mouth guards, or bite guards. These guards are retainer-like soft or hard plastic pieces that cushion your teeth from the force of clenching and prevent the teeth from grinding together. Though it may be a little weird at first, it should start feeling comfortable after wearing it for four to six weeks.
